Despite Heat Wave, Many Flock to Mamaroneck's 65th Annual Fireman's Carnival For Cool Diversion

The 65th annual Fireman's Carnival will run through Wednesday, July 4 at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck.

Despite punishing temperatures during daytime hours that kept most Westchester residents indoors or submerged in pool or ocean waters on Sunday, many took advantage of the sun's waning intensity in the latter half of the day to attend the sprawling fair in .  

As cool breezes blew off the Mamaroneck Harbor, a Ferris Wheel rocked passengers slowly back and forth while The Zipper—a new ride this year—tossed its mesh-boxed occupants in dizzyingly different directions, making it one of the rides least suited to the weak-stomached.  

The for the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department, with including Meals on Wheels and a local breast cancer organization as well as scholarships for Mamaroneck and Rye Neck High School students, said Village of Mamaroneck (VOM) Fire Chief Chris Szymanowski. A portion of the estimated $10-15K that will be raised from the event will also be split among the five VOM fire companies.

So far, the turnout has been good, said Szymanowski, who estimates that approximately 25-30,000 will attend. In the past, attendees have traveled from both near and far within the tri-state area.

"I'm hoping for good weather for the Fourth of July," he said, adding, "We're one of the few that do fireworks on the Fourth."

The Fireman's Carnival runs through July 5, every night from 7-11 p.m. On July 4, the Carnival will be open from 4-11 p.m.; there will be a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m.
