Former Larchmont resident Arthur Gerard Tebbens died peacefully in Bar Harbor, Maine on June 25. He was 83.
Arthur was born to Bernard and Elsa Larsen Tebbens in Oceanside, NY on September 19, 1929, the third of three sons. He grew up in Rockville Center, Long Island, NY and worked many summers as a lifeguard at Jones Beach. Arthur graduated from Phillips Academy Andover '47, Yale University '51, and Yale Law
School '54. At Yale he lettered in swimming. He was the first in his family to attend post-secondary school.
He served in the US Navy as an air intelligence officer on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. Arthur married Jane Rae Ferguson in 1956 and honeymooned while on shore leave in Genoa, Italy. Together they raised three daughters in Larchmont, NY. He worked as a corporate lawyer in New York City and then had a family practice in Larchmont, NY. He was an avid sailor and also a USMS American Master top ten competitive swimmer.
Survived by daughters Alice Rutledge of Austin, TX, Liddy Hubbell of Bar Harbor, ME, Sarah Tebbens Barton of Xenia, OH, as well as their husbands Neal, Brian and Chris and five grandchildren Andy, Emily, Nick, Nora and Kate. A memorial will be held in West Fulton, NY in August.
