Three Tons of Garbage Collected on Mamaroneck's Clean Up and Green Up Day

The Village of Mamaroneck's Fifth Annual Clean Up Day was on Sunday, April 27.

Volunteers fished out two microwave ovens and a lawnmower, among other things, at this weekend's Fifth Annual "Clean Up and Green Up Day" in Mamaroneck.

As they have done in past years, approximately 70 volunteers pitched in to clean up detrius from Harbor Island Park, Columbus Park, Warren Avenue Park and Bub Walker Park. According to Village Manager Richard Slingerland, several dozen bags bags of garbage (approximately three tons) were collected, including a heavily rusted bicycle, a garage door spring mechanism, a bag of solidified concrete, an 50-pound electric motor, luggage, branches and brush, numerous plastic bags that had washed into the rivers, remnants of an old, absorbent boom that was put across the Sheldrake River by the Center Avenue pedestrian bridge and many bottles, cans, miscellaneous garbage and other floating debris.

Crews from Hampshire Country Club, Covanta Energy and the Aqua Visions Scuba and Kayak Store pitched in and local businesses helped sponsor the event including Chocolations, Aqua Visions, Brewer's Hardware, Dunkin Donut's, McDonalds, Mangone's Nursery, Covanta, Peter & Sons Bakery, Sound Waters, Stop & Shop and Trader Joe's.

"For recognition and to honor the village’s annual celebration of Arbor Day, we also planted two new Red Oak trees at the entrance of the Harbor Island Pavilion Access Road, to being the process of replacing the many diseased and hollowed out trees along the road. We will also be implementing the plan to replace several trees along the Harbor Island West Basin that were completely wiped out due to Hurricane Sandy," said Slingerland, in a statement.
