Halloween? What to Do in Larchmont and Mamaroneck

The question on every little monster's mind.

Although many Sound Shore residents may have been too preoccupied this week with flooding and power outages as a result of Hurricane Sandy's wrath to worry about Halloween, the younger set may only be concerned about one thing: Can we still go trick-or-treating?

Both Village and Town of Mamaroneck officials strongly advise against taking kids out to trick-or-treat due to hazardous wires and debris that are scattered throughout the area.

The Village of Mamaroneck has provided the following tips for parents that do take their kids out today:

Halloween will be restricted to daylight hours. Please make sure all children are accompanied by their parents or guardian. There are several streets that remain impassable or are restricted.

Here are some suggestions for children to have a safe night:

  • Avoid any downed electrical wires or equipment. Treat any wire that’s in the street or on lawns as if it’s carrying electricity, which can carry painful shocks. They also should avoid any puddles or standing water, which can conduct electricity. Numerous wires fell to Sandy’s wicked ride through our area.
  • Be careful crossing streets, especially at corners with no red lights. Hold on to younger brothers, sisters and friends when crossing the street. Be sure to look both ways.
  • Carry a flashlight when walking even if the street is lighted, but definitely if Hurricane Sandy snuffed out street lights.
  • Wear a safety vest. They not only are cool but keep little trick or treaters visible to drivers and others.
  • Never go into a stranger’s house. Make sure mom or dad, a guardian, or an older sister or brother, is within sight.
  • Children should always let their parents know where they are going.
  • Children are urged to be careful near Con Edison work sites in their neighborhoods.

The Village of Larchmont has postponed trick-or-treating due to hazardous conditions throughout the village, according to their website.  They recommend that parents not take their children; the village will reschedule for another date.
