It was a solemn day until sweltering skies for Iona College's annual September 11th Memorial service.

The gathering honored the memory of 15 Iona alumni and two first responders who died as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.

Many of the students, faculty and staff sought some relief from the heat and humidity by observing the ceremony from the shade provided by the scarce trees in Memorial Park in front of Ryan Library on the campus.

After a haunting rendition of Amazing Grace, performed by the Iona College Pipe Band, Jaclyn Shearer, Class of 2014, read the names of the Iona alumni and first responders and then asked the audience to speak the names of those they wanted to remember.

President Joseph Nyre spoke before laying a wreath in Memorial Park.

He said it was an opportunity "to pray, to remember and to give thanks" for those who lost their lives.

"We must never forget our fellow alums," Nyre said.
