Meet the Artists with Humberto Chavez

The Larchmont Public
Library announces that there will be a reception for the student artists who
have completed the library’s first-ever series of art classes taught by noted
Cuban artist, Humberto Chavez. The class, called “Discovering Basic Visual
Elements of Communication through Drawing and Painting”, focused on the artistic
concepts of line, shape, texture, contrast, color, space and volume; the basic
elements of composition and communication in the artistic process.

The reception will be
held on Saturday, November 16, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the Oresman Gallery at
the library. Several of the works completed by the students will be exhibited
and will remain on display through November 27.

According to Chavez, “the
six-week course involved improving self-expression through drawing and painting.
Many of the exercises focused on the basic elements of art and students will be
encouraged to explore and discover their inner creative powers. I am amazed
with the progress of each student and even more amazed with the art that they
have created”.

Humberto Chávez left
his native Cuba in the 1960’s to study art in New York City at Parsons School
of Design. A Bauhaus based curriculum, with experimental courses in
architecture, construction, color and design, together with the influence of
relevant American and European artists from the 1970’s and 80’s, became a solid
art foundation for him.  His career
flourished and his work has been seen in more than 70 North American
exhibitions, including many University galleries as well as the Bronx Museum of
the Arts in New York, the Center for Fine Arts in Florida and several galleries
and art museums in Europe. Chávez also lived and worked in Portugal, where his
sculpture is represented in the permanent collection of the Gulbenkian
Museum.  Presently, he is a member of the
Mamaroneck Artists Guild in Larchmont, NY.
