Rotary Club of Larchmont adds New Member and Awards Area Senior Students

Larchmont, NY, March 14th, 2014– The Rotary Club of Larchmont (RCL) had two very important and exciting events occur at its March 14th weekly luncheon: • Larchmont Village Fire Chief John Caparelli was inducted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Larchmont. He was made Fire Chief this past Fall. • Two area high school seniors were awarded RCL’s Blum Award for exceptional service to their community. ‘“Service Above Self,” which is the Rotary motto, was very well represented at the Club’s luncheon today. Obviously, the Fire Chief of Larchmont personifies the commitment to public service, education and safety. Having him as a member reinforces the diversity of our membership in occupation and provides us with the opportunity for regular updates on fire and related events in and around our area,” said Club President Stephen Bartell. The specific goal of the Blum Award is to recognize local high school students for their initiative, leadership and creative pursuit of making a difference in their local community and beyond. These young leaders are role models to their peers by giving of their time, energy and resources. This year, RCL honored two young men from Explorer Post 622 of the Larchmont Fire Department. They were introduced by Sam Orens, the Post’s leader, who provided a brief history of the Post. • Alex Gerace, a senior at Mamaroneck High School, is a Lieutenant at the Post and has been training for several years. • Matt Shearer, a senior at New Rochelle High School, is responsible for rejuvenating Explorer Post 622. He asked to be part of it, but found it wasn’t operating .His initiative and fortitude brought the organization back to life. Both men addressed the audience, telling of the path they followed to be here. Both young men will be allowed to participate fully as volunteer firemen after their 18th birthdays. In addition, Mayor Anne McAndrews attended and spoke about the importance of volunteering and the bravery of these men in training and participating already in life-and-death situations. Marian White, Co- Chairperson for the Blum Awards, said, “We are so proud of these exceptional young men. Their commitment to training and performance as part of the Larchmont Fire Department is worthy of our honoring them. The Blum Award is specifically designed to acknowledge and appreciate this kind of dedication.” The Rotary Club of Larchmont was founded in 1929 and has continuously performed public service projects and provided humanitarian aid locally, regionally and globally. Rotary Club of Larchmont luncheon meetings occur every Friday at the Larchmont Yacht Club at 12:15pm. The Club is open to new members: interested individuals may simply come to a Friday meeting, call Stephen Bartell at 914-833-8683, or get information about the Club at www.rotarylarchmont.org
