Soccer Teams Make a Goal for Haiti

Mamaroneck High School athletes come together to show support for their coach's hometown.

When Haiti was devastated by an earthquake earlier this year, the tragedy hit close to home for many in America. Such was for Ron Blain, the Mamaroneck girl's varsity soccer coach, who grew up in Haiti and still has family residing there today.

Even months after the quake, Haiti is still in much need for financial support. In a show of unity, the Mamaroneck boys and girls varsity soccer teams came together Thursday afternoon at Harbor Island to hold a fundraiser soccer clinic, with all proceeds being donated to relief funds for Haiti. The event was attended by over 40 Larchmont and Mamaroneck athletes from recreation and travel leagues, and consisted of tutorials and soccer matches.

"The funds raised here at this clinic will go and support the local schools in Léogâne" said Ron Blain, who has been the varsity girls soccer coach for the past four years.

Léogâne, where Blain grew up, was at the epicenter of the earthquake earlier this year. The damage in Léogâne was considered to be worse than in Port-au-Prince, although most news coverage of the natural disaster took place in the capital.
