Fire Destroys Attic, Much of Second Floor at Cherry Avenue Home

Firefighters responded to a call Saturday afternoon at No. 15.

A fire that began in the attic of a single-family home on Cherry Avenue Saturday afternoon in Larchmont caused extensive fire and water damage, but no injuries.

A woman renting 15 Cherry Ave. for the summer smelled smoke and called for help at around 3:50 p.m., said Larchmont Fire Department Capt. John Caparelli.

Firefighters arrived to see smoke coming out of the roof.

The cause of the fire appears to be an electrical malfunction above the front bedroom on the second floor, Caparelli said.

"The whole front of the house on the second floor was damaged, as was the attic, but there was water damage throughout the house, mostly toward the front," he said.

The home is not habitable. Consolidated Edison was called to shut off gas and electric. Neighbors and family are helping the woman out, but luckily she was in the process of moving so most of her belongings were packed away and sustained less damage than if they were out.

It took about an hour to completely knock down the fire and another hour for firefighters to finish at the scene, such as checking for any extension of the fire.
