'Joan Jett Meets Hello Kitty': Young Mamaroneck Designer's Version of Gothic Glam

Rye Neck graduate and fashion designer Danielle Stein Gonzalez's accessories are a reflection of her unique personality.

In a sea of Tory Burch and J.Crew, accessories designer and Mamaroneck resident Danielle Stein Gonzales prides herself on being cut from a different cloth. Equal parts edgy, vintage and pop-girl, Gonzalez is known to turn heads when she walks onto a commuter train, but, luckily, so do her designs. The 25-year-old designer of Verona Black—clad in a high-waisted skirt, secretary blouse and cat eye glasses on the day she spoke to Patch—describes her leap into the world of design as almost accidental. Originally enrolled at Five Towns College on Long Island as music major, a long commute and dwindling interest in her course of study led the creatively inclined Gonzalez to experiment with accessory design, fashioning earrings out of bottle …

3 Local Kids Chosen For Albany Program

Students from Blind Brook and Rye Neck high schools will get a first-hand look at state government next month thanks to the League of Women Voters.

They're leaders in their schools. They're volunteers, tutors, student senators and artists. And after they spend four hands-on days in Albany next month, they'll know more about state politics than most adults. Three local students have been chosen to attend this year's "Students Inside Albany" program thanks to the League of Women Voters – Rye, Rye Brook & Port Chester. Lara Cohen, a junior at Blind Brook High School, has been active in her school's student government and the Model United Nations. She's also a tutor, a camp counselor and the founder of a group that raises awareness of dating abuse. Luke Murphy and Annabel Gutterman both attend Rye Neck High School. Murphy counts the Science Olympiad, student senate and school golf team as…

Gedney Farmhouse Fate Still Uncertain; Proposal Withdrawn

On Wednesday night, the Rye Neck School Board passed a resolution to either demolish or remove the over 200-year-old home on 734 E. Boston Post Rd.

Although the Rye Neck School board stopped short of declaring a demolition date for the Gedney Farmhouse at 734 E. Boston Post Rd.—passing a resolution to either demolish or remove the house from school property this week—the fate of the over 200-year-old farmhouse is still undetermined, as local groups weigh the uncertainties of their options for relocating it. According to e-mails sent to Rye Neck Superintendent Peter Mustich, several local historical societies—The Rye Historical Society, Rye archivist Richard Hourahan and The Rye Landmarks Committee —have withdrawn their names from a Dec. 12 petition that was submitted to the board by the Concerned Citizens For Preserving the Gedney Farmhouse.   The Larchmont Historical Society told …

Update: Class of '74 Completes Commemorative 9/11 Rock at Rye Neck High School

A large rock at Rye Neck High School was painted in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9/11. A ceremony will be held Friday, September 9 at 5 p.m. at the school.

Update: The ceremony, orginally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., has been canceled; the ceremony required prior Board of Education approval. The large rock in front of Rye Neck High School (RNHS) is significant for many reasons.  For close to 50 years, students from the high school have painted the rock for every landmark event including graduation, homecoming and prom, each layer of paint marking another passing year, like the rings on a tree. This year Mamaroneck resident and RNHS class of 1974 graduate Joseph Humphreys came up with the idea to paint the rock in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9/11. He made a plea on Facebook for an artist to help execute his idea and connected with Sandra Garofalo, an art design teacher at the…

Rye Neck's Class of 2010 Ready to Dream Big

The school held its 115th commencement on Thursday, with Bard College President Leon Botstein as the keynote speaker.

Emotions ran high at Rye Neck High School Thursday afternoon as the class of 2010 walked and was recognized during the school's 150th commencement ceremony. The ceremony got off to an energetic and musical start, as Rye Neck's graduating seniors were led into the school's jam-packed auditorium by The Manhattan College Pipes and Drums. So many people were in attendance that extended families and friends were asked to watch the graduation on a large screen in the school's cafeteria. Class Salutatorian Christina Baal delivered the ceremony's first speech, looking back on her years at Rye Neck with fondness, and admitting that she was bitter, and even angry, at the thought of them ending in the days leading up to Thursday's graduation. However…

Twenty-two varsity sports from all three seasons were represented, from basketball and football to bowling and skiing. This year, two boys teams— cross-country and tennis—were league champions, and boys soccer was Rye Neck's sole sectional champion. Rye Neck Students Get Classy at Junior/Senior Prom

Patch heads to the New York Botanical Gardens to give an inside look at the Rye Neck High School junior/senior prom.

After a year of planning and organizing, Rye Neck High School's junior/senior prom was held last night in the Bronx. The celebration took place at Abigail Kirsch in the New York Botanical Garden, a reception hall often used for weddings and banquets. It is a tradition at Rye Neck High School to have the junior class organize the yearly prom. "We try to give them as much independence, freedom of choice and selection of just about everything involved," said Pat Rinello, senior class advisor. "They're very responsible for everything they do." As some of the last limousines started pulling in, rain started coming down. Luckily, the sky cleared out for the rest of the evening. Students enjoyed a cocktail hour in the tent area of the building …
