Humane Society's Pet in The Spotlight

Luanna's Painted Toenails Need a New Home

One of many animals available for adoption at the New Rochelle Humane Society.

From the New Rochelle Humane Society: Not many dogs arrive with a manicure complete with pained nails, but Luanna did. With her red painted nails, she was obviously cared for by someone, but no one came looking for her. Luanna is a gentle, medium-sized mixbreed who is about 2 years old. She becomes very attached to people she knows, simply wanting to sit by their side. Luanna is completely housetrained and walks nicely on leash. The adoption fee of $150 includes spay, vaccines, heartworm test and microchip. Contact the New Rochelle Humane Society for more information. Open seven days a week for adoption, they are located at 70 Portman Rd. in New Rochelle. Their phone number is 914-632-2925.

If you want to give pretty Luanna a home, you'd better hurry. The New Rochelle 'Humane' (not) Society is a kill shelter.   more ›

Humane Society's Pet in The Spotlight

Cassie Loves Snuggles, Needs New Home

Here's one of many animals at the New Rochelle Humane Society that needs a new family.

Cassie is a 25-pound, 8-month-old adorable snuggle pup. She came to us from an overcrowded shelter in Kentucky. Cassie is super friendly with people and with dogs she has been properly introduced to—after all, she is a southern belle! Cassie's hoping to join an active family who will include her in lots of activities, maybe even take her to agility classes and let her show everyone just how smart she is.  Since she is a teenager, she will need basic training.  Her adoption fee is $150. Cassie is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Contact the New Rochelle Humane Society for more information. They are located at 70 Portman Rd. in New Rochelle. Their phone number is 914-632-2925.

Cassie is an amazing dog. I have had the opportunity to walk her at the shelter. She is smart-already knows how to sit and use the tunnel and A-frame. She loves sitting in the grass and being petted. She has a ton of energy and just wants someone who she can love and will love her back. Give her the time and you will reap the rewards. Naomi   more ›

P-Harmony: A Dating Place for Cats and Dogs

Many cats and dogs are lonely and looking for love at the Larchmont Pet Rescue. They have given up on the back alleys and garbage cans of their sordid pasts to look elsewhere for companionship. Are you the one?

Finding that lifelong companion to walk hand and hand through life is something that many men and women have struggled with for generations.  Sometimes we are too picky or not picky enough and end up with the wrong person and invariably almost without fail, we begin to question ourselves and wonder if there is anyone out there for us. For our feline and furry friends, this process to find a partner is even more daunting since they don’t work, don’t clean, don’t cook and one way or another, need our help when going to the bathroom. All this aside, Patch has decided to lend a hand to the cats and dogs that are rescues, living in foster homes under the close supervision of caring families in Larchmont and surrounding areas, who hope that …

Hounds on the Sound Takes Over Glen Island Park

Residents and dog owners get together to support local animal rescue groups.

Over a thousand pet owners brought their canine companions to Glen Island Park in New Rochelle on Sunday to help support two local animal rescues. The annual dog walk, known as Hounds on the Sound, is a joint effort of the New Rochelle Humane Society and Larchmont's Pet Rescue. "We decided to get together and run a big joint event," explained Dianne Heim of New Rochelle Humane Society. "All the money raised is divided 50/50 between our two groups." Dogs and their owners enjoyed a day filled with contests, vendors and the sounds of Larchmont-Mamaroneck's 45 RPM band. The New Rochelle Police Department's K-9 Unit was on hand giving demonstrations while the band played sock-hop tunes throughout the afternoon. The guest speaker at the event …

Animal Rescue Efforts Bring Community Together

Larchmont is home to a unique pet rescue service that relies on foster families that take in dogs until they find a qualified home to adopt.

Ask anyone who has adopted their pet and they can tell you how rewarding an experience it was. Pet Rescue, one of Westchester's most successful pet rescue groups, is based out of Larchmont and is dedicated to finding homes for dogs, cats and other critters. Unlike animal shelters, Pet Rescue relies on foster families in the area that take in dogs until they find a qualified home to adopt. Since 1982, the non-profit organization has found homes for more than 10,000 cats and dogs with a noticeable increase in adoptions and volunteers in the past six years. Realizing the benefits of rehabilitating animals in a home environment, the organization was created by Sue Kamell of Larchmont, who was unsatisfied with the conditions at animal shelters…
