Providing a New Home For Donated Clothing: Mamaroneck Clothes Closet Event This Weekend

The Clothes Closet event will distribute clothing at the Mamaroneck CAP Center this Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Clothes Closet founders Emma Loebel and Rebecca Ward, seniors at Mamaroneck High School (MHS), have not been collecting gently used clothing for the past four years to pad their own closets. Rather, their intentions have been loftier: provide clothing to less fortunate members of the community. The organization—also an official club at MHS—came about as a way not only to give back to the community, but also to connect donations with local people in need, rather than dumping bags in a collection box, with an anonymous destination in mind. This Saturday, May 19, the Clothes Closet will distribute clothing at the Mamaroneck CAP Center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., as they did last year. Last year’s event attracted several hundred residents and …

2011-2012 Future Business Leaders at Mamaroneck High School Win Honors

Mamaroneck High School students competed at the New York State Leadership Conference from April 18-20.

Editor's Note: What follows is user-generated news by Moni Kaneti, the Mamaroneck High School Future Business Leaders reporter. From April 18-20, the local Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Mamaroneck High School Chapter attended the New York State Leadership Conference (SLC) at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, NY. Missing three and a half days of school was definitely worth it for the Mamaroneck FBLA students. Competing in over 15 competitive events, students placed top five in ten competitions with Carlin Iannarelli and Moni Kaneti winning 5th in Community Service Project, Asher Hochman and Felicia O’Connor in 5th place for Digital Design and Promotion, and Jesse Vellue, Noah Velasquez and Jordan Garofalo placing 5th…

Essay Contest Invites High School Students to Remember Mamaroneck Veterans

The twelfth annual Richard M. Kemper Memorial Essay Contest will award two prizes of $300 each to high school students.

It has been a Mamaroneck tradition for 12 years now. The Richard M. Kemper Foundation for the Promotion of Human Rights Education has sponsored an annual essay contest for high school students, challenging them to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day beyond picnics and beach openings. Students are asked to eloquently write about the patriotic values that were hard-won by veterans of previous generations. A graduate of Mamaroneck High School (MHS), Richard M. Kemper was a U.S. Army lieutenant who was killed during WWII.  With land donated by his family, a monument paying tribute to Kemper and 99 others from MHS was erected in front of the school and named Richard M. Kemper Park.  The park has played host to a number of Veteran’s Day …

American Red Cross Flag Raised in Mamaroneck Today by High School Red Cross Club

On an unseasonably warm and sunny day, the American Red Cross flag was raised at Mamaroneck Town Center.

In honor of both American Red Cross month and the partnership between the Mamaroneck High School (MHS) Red Cross Club and the Certified Emergency Response Team (CERT) during Tropical Storm Irene, the Red Cross flag was raised at the Mamaroneck Town Center today.  The flag will remain there through March 31. Acknowledging the symbiotic partnership between the MHS club and CERT during Irene, Eli Russ, club president, said, “Without CERT, we wouldn’t have been able to do the job we were there to do.”  The Red Cross Club currently has 25 active members. Both CERT and 13 members of the MHS club helped staff an evacuation center set up in the MHS gym during Tropical Storm Irene.   The Red Cross Club also organized a furniture donation drive in …

Semi-Royal Shakespeare to Present 'Merry Wives of Windsor' At Hommocks Middle School Tonight

There won't be a dry eye in the house after tonight's performance at 7 p.m.

After nearly four decades, the Semi-Royal Shakespeare Company at Mamaroneck High School is still going strong, with the blood, sweat and tears of Mamaroneck High School (MHS) students to push it along.  And, as a testament to the dedication of the extracurricular group, many of the approximately 100 involved students—a diverse mix of freshmen through seniors—will perform throughout their years at MHS. Tonight—in their last performance—the troupe will present the Merry Wives of Windsor at 7 p.m. at Richard F. North theater at Hommocks Middle School.  This is the third performance of the play; a second cast performed Richard III earlier in the week. And it’s not only the students that are dedicated to performing the works of the 400-year-old…

Sharing Furniture With the Community: Mamaroneck-Based Organization to Hold Drive

The Mamaroneck High School based arm of Furniture Sharehouse will be holding a furniture drive in the parking lot of the school on March 17.

There are varied reasons why a family may permenantly lose their home and possessions and be forced to flee abruptly with very few personal items: flood, eviction or an abusive home life. However, the effect is the same. Once new housing is secured, some may be resigned to spartan surroundings until they can afford to replace items that have been lost or left behind. That's where Furniture Sharehouse—a not-for-profit organization that provides furniture to people in need—comes into play: connecting needy families in the community with donated items that can help rebuild lives. The Mamaroneck High School (MHS) Furniture Sharehouse service club will be collecting gently used furniture for redistribution to needy families  on Saturday, March …

Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck May Soon Be Designated School Zone

The Town of Mamaroneck Board approved legislation at a meeting on Feb. 15 that allows them to change the speed limit on the Boston Post Road between Weaver Street and the Town Center.

Drivers on the Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck may be slowing down in the coming months, at least during school hours. The Town of Mamaroneck Board unanimously endorsed the Safe Routes to School Legislation sponsored by New York State Assemblyman George Latimer (D) that would allow the municipality to set the speed limit—currently 35 MPH—on the state-owned stretch of Post Road between Hommocks Middle School and Mamaroneck High School (MHS).   Although it is unknown at this time what if any changes will be made to the speed limit—the legislation would simply grant the town the authority to do so—any potential modifications will only be effective on school days between the hours of 7 a.m.-5 p.m. The corridor from Weaver Street to the Town …

Both the Hommocks and MHS have been here for quite some time, why only now put in a school speed limit? My kids went to both schools between 2003 and 2009 and knew two other kids who were hit by cars on both the Boston Post Road and on the Palmer Avenue side of MHS; one kid had his ankle broke and had to have metal pins put in to hold it together -- he is now my daughter's fiance and he still …   more ›

Will Outsourced Transportation Impact Mamaroneck Students?

A representative of Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) Westchester Local 860 spoke out against the district's proposal to outsource transportation services.

UPDATE: The district currently employs 27 full and part-time bus drivers with total transportation expenditures totaling $3.9 million for the 2010-11 school year, of which approximately $2.3 million was spent on personnel costs and $1.6 million on contracted transportation. A total of 687 students were transported. The school is in the second year of a five-year transportation contract with Ardsley Bus Company. For more information, please visit the school's website here.  "Any changes that the district would make would be consistent with its legal responsibilities and in accordance with all laws around collective bargaining," said District Spokesperson Debbie Manetta, about the proposed outsourcing.   "It’s difficult at this point to talk…

UPDATE: Gas Leak Under Control at Mamaroneck High School

Evacuation and emergency dismissal plans were activated.

UPDATE: 10:00 p.m. Mamaroneck High School will be open on Sunday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for students to come retrieve belongings left on Friday. UPDATE: 3:30 p.m. The source of the leak was an underground pipe that was disturbed while work was being done today, said Con Ed spokesperson Sara Banda. Earlier in the week, the school reported a leak in a two-inch pipe, located near the administrative offices at Mamaroneck High School, and Con Ed came to the school to provide a temporary solution until a contractor was hired, said Banda.  As per Con Ed protocol, she said, crews must be on site daily to supervise the work. Today, a Con Ed worker smelled gas while work was being done by the school's contractor. The evacuation has been …

Mamaroneck High School Students Will Attend New Hampshire Primary

The students will attend the New Hampshire primary beginning on Sunday and will return to Mamaroneck on Tuesday night, Jan. 10.

The opportunity to mingle with presidential candidates during a primary, witnessing historical events as they unfold during what will be a closely watched political race, is one that doesn’t arise too often.  Luckily for the students in Joe Liberti’s Advanced Placement (AP) American Government and Politics class at Mamaroneck High School (MHS), they’ll have a front row seat for all the action as they attend the New Hampshire primary this Sunday, Jan. 8. The actual primary election will take place Tuesday, Jan. 10. Departing early Sunday morning, 64 students in Liberti’s class—along with parent chaperones and MHS Principal Liz Clain—will travel to New Hampshire for the primary, as one of the only large high school groups in attendance.    …
