Hounds on the Sound Takes Over Glen Island Park

Residents and dog owners get together to support local animal rescue groups.

Over a thousand pet owners brought their canine companions to Glen Island Park in New Rochelle on Sunday to help support two local animal rescues. The annual dog walk, known as Hounds on the Sound, is a joint effort of the New Rochelle Humane Society and Larchmont's Pet Rescue. "We decided to get together and run a big joint event," explained Dianne Heim of New Rochelle Humane Society. "All the money raised is divided 50/50 between our two groups." Dogs and their owners enjoyed a day filled with contests, vendors and the sounds of Larchmont-Mamaroneck's 45 RPM band. Animal Rescue Efforts Bring Community Together

Larchmont is home to a unique pet rescue service that relies on foster families that take in dogs until they find a qualified home to adopt.

Ask anyone who has adopted their pet and they can tell you how rewarding an experience it was. Pet Rescue, one of Westchester's most successful pet rescue groups, is based out of Larchmont and is dedicated to finding homes for dogs, cats and other critters. Unlike animal shelters, Pet Rescue relies on foster families in the area that take in dogs until they find a qualified home to adopt. Since 1982, the non-profit organization has found homes for more than 10,000 cats and dogs with a noticeable increase in adoptions and volunteers in the past six years. Realizing the benefits of rehabilitating animals in a home environment, the organization was created by Sue Kamell of Larchmont, who was unsatisfied with the conditions at animal shelters…
