Interestingly, the Skirmish of Heathcote Hill, a battle George Washington won during the Revolutionary War, occurred here and is represented by a historic plaque outside.</p> <p>The church features several outstanding community outreach programs, including a food pantry, which collects food donations for distribution to local families. The Red Chair Project, as featured in the Larchmont Gazette, "transforms homes for the needy" in similar fashion to home-remodeling reality shows, except that all furniture, materials and labor is acquired through local donations and volunteering.</p> <p>Another yearly program St. John's features is the Christmas Angels seasonal gift-giving program, which provides gifts for families who would otherwise be without. There are also a number of small interest/spiritual-based groups that meet regularly in the church throughout the year, and are open to the parish.
