Approximately 500 people gathered to welcome the year of the dragon at the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans' 23nd annual Chinese New Year program at New Rochelle High School on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Hui Huang of Croton-on-Hudson and Erqian Na of Yonkers hand-rolled, filled and steamed dumplings for an eager crowd of children in the cafeteria at New Rochelle High School on Saturday. "You like them, yes?" Huang asked Brian Chin, 5, of Mamaroneck as he and his brother Ethan, 8, took turns crimping the doughy edges of the dumplings. "Be careful, it's hot," she warned Katie Yacoub, 11, of Eastchester. Nearby, Eileen Wang of Valhalla played a modified game of peekaboo with her 3-year-old daughter Emma who was trying on an elaborate, child-sized lion mask at the dance workshop. Although the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans hosts the event, the gathering is a combined effort bringing together sponsors TD Bank and PepsiCo as well …

A Hommocks Middle School student told school officials he was approached by men in a car yesterday afternoon.
As he was walking home from school yesterday at 4:45 p.m. on bustling Boston Post Road near Trader Joe’s, a Hommocks Middle School student reported that he was approached by several strange men in a car who offered to give him a ride or help, according to an e-mail notice that was sent out to Hommocks parents today. The car—described as a beige Toyota four-door sedan driven by a man—had several male passengers in the back as well. The car continued to follow the student, presumably after he refused assistance, until he ran into nearby Stop and Shop to call his father. At posting time, the Town of Mamaroneck police had not yet returned a call for comment. The e-mail urged parents to instruct their children in “stranger danger measures,” …

The Hommocks Players will present the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical this week.
The Biblical story of a father gifting his favorite son a multi-hued, dynamically colored coat, setting off a chain of malicious actions spurred on by envious siblings, is the theme of one of the longest running musicals on Broadway: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. As the story goes, Joseph is the adored son of Jacob; Joseph's gift of a beautiful coat makes his 11 other brothers so envious that they sell him into slavery and stage his death. However, Joseph prospers despite his brothers’ attempt to banish him by interpreting dreams and goes to work for the Pharaoh. Eventually he is reunited with his brothers. On the cusp of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical’s 30th anniversary, the afterschool club the Hommocks Players will …

The author contemplates the importance of parents working together for the good of the next generation.
In an ideal world, there should be no such thing as bullying. A child would be so supported and positive they would never feel the kind of hopelessness that causes anyone to take their own life. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world. If we did, the parents of Phillip Parker, a student at Gordonsville High School, TN, would have spent past weeks planning his future instead of his funeral. On occasion, this column has inspired opposing commentary that expressed a “kids will be kids” attitude. Some have shared stories of bullying when they were kids and how it made everybody stronger. Of course it’s true, life isn’t fair, and our children are not perfect. Bullying does exist and childhood is meant to teach life lessons. Children have…

The Mamaroneck Selection Committee is vetting new candidates for two soon to be open seats on the Mamaroneck School Board.
Mamaroneck Union Free School District board members Anant Nambiar and Linnet Tse will not be running for reelection this year, and Board President Robin Nichinsky's second term is ending, leaving three vacant seats on the school board. Board members are elected to three-year terms, and are involved in policy-making, developing district goals, adopting the annual budget, decision-making in the timing and sizing of bonds, determining facility needs and approving the school calendar. The Mamaroneck Selection Committee—24 elected residents who volunteer to recruit and endorse candidates for the School Board—is accepting applications for the open positions, which are due on Feb. 17. A representative of Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) Westchester Local 860 spoke out against the district's proposal to outsource transportation services.
UPDATE: The district currently employs 27 full and part-time bus drivers with total transportation expenditures totaling $3.9 million for the 2010-11 school year, of which approximately $2.3 million was spent on personnel costs and $1.6 million on contracted transportation. A total of 687 students were transported. The school is in the second year of a five-year transportation contract with Ardsley Bus Company. For more information, please visit the school's website here. "Any changes that the district would make would be consistent with its legal responsibilities and in accordance with all laws around collective bargaining," said District Spokesperson Debbie Manetta, about the proposed outsourcing. "It’s difficult at this point to talk…

The first-annual Pleasantville Youth Wrestling Tournament drew 288 boys and girls between the ages of five and 12 to Pleasantville High School on Sunday morning. The screetchy sounds of blowing whistles were at times drowned out by screaming coaches and parents at the action-filled event. Competitors came from Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Fairfield counties. They competed in five divisions based on age, with each division broken down into matches based on weight. The event was hosted by Pleasantville Youth Wrestling.
