More August Enchantment for Rising Juniors

August Enchantment for Rising Juniors

Calling all rising juniors --

August days lure us with their lingering sunsets and gentle breezes.
But you can combine relaxation with friends and family with the building of some basic study skills for junior year.  Here are some favorites, taken from an informal survey of teachers across the internet.

2 Great ways to enhance your vocabulary:

--  Check out this fresh,  online learning site run by the United Nations, called Freerice.com.  For each answer you get right (humanities, science, vocabulary), they donate 10 grains of rice to a U.N. Food Charity.  Charity and learning -- hmmn, it's a win-win!

--  Power in small books - Hot Words for SAT by Carnevale. A favorite, effective,  "thin book" to carry with you to the beach or park.  it can be bought on Amazon, costs about $8.00.  Easy to use, it can boost your SAT vocab by up to 200 words; most students love its simplicity and user-friendliness.

 Make a reading list

Follow your high school's list, or make your own.
    Some  favorites are:

The Giver by Lowry,  classics such as  Great Gatsby,  To Kill A Mockingbird, Ragtime, or any Shakespeare play.

Challenge a friend. You each create a list, or read a book together.  Share reviews at the end.

Sit outdoors and read.  Carve out daily time to read.  Good magazines and newspapers are great entertainment.

Schedule a games night with your friends

Play some new and old board games, checkers or scrabble.  This will build your strategic and problem-solving skills, essential skills on the college exams.

 Polish up on math online

Teachers highly recommend online math tutoring from Khan Academy. I suggest scheduling five days in a row to do this, possibly with a friend.

On this well-known site, Sal is your personal teacher. Use it to go over areas of  math weakness.  In no time at all, you will understand and remember the correct solutions -- and have a head start on SAT math for the fall!

Hope these ideas have helped juniors bring enchantment to summer learning!
