Mamaroneck Marine Center Takes Creatures on Tour

Aquatic creatures were part of the learning experience provided by the center.

A little bit of Long Island Sound was on display recently at the New Rochelle Public Library.

Katherine Desmond, the director of the Marine Education Center at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck, said that everything brought to the library was from Long Island Sound.

There were saltwater fish tanks that contained live specimens collected from Mamaroneck Harbor, along with shells, bones and dried marine forms.

"We live in Mamaroneck and want to turn people's attention to the Long Island Sound and its teeming life," Desmond said.

The exhibit was part of the library's summer programming for children focusing on the sound.

It was also part of a sneak preview of "Sound Fest: the Long Island Sound Science Festival, which will be presented in the sound shore communities in October 2014.

Producer Ann Marie Cunningham said there will be monthly previews of the festival in shore communities in following months. For information, email amckon141@gmail.com.
