Iona's Hines Chosen MAAC Rookie of the Week

By Brian Beyrer.

EDISON, NJ—Iona College men's basketball freshman Ryden Hines was named MAAC Rookie of the Week for his breakout effort in the Gaels' contest at Northern Iowa Saturday. Hines is the first Maroon & Gold performer to win the rookie award this season.

Entering the contest with just 17 points in his first seven appearances as a Gael, the Anchorage, AK native Hines more than doubled the output with a season-best 19 points against the Panthers. He earned his first collegiate start and scored 15 in the first half. Hines was 7-for-9 from the field in the game, 3-for-5 from long distance and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe adding three rebounds, an assist and a steal in the loss.

Hines is the first Gael to be named MAAC Rookie of the Week since sophomore A.J. English won his third award last season on Jan. 7, 2013. It's the fifth MAAC Rookie of the Week for the Maroon & Gold under head coach Tim Cluess following English's three and senior Sean Armand's award on Jan. 17, 2011.

Iona completed its non-conference schedule with a 90-78 loss to Northern Iowa and returns to MAAC play this week with two contests. The Gaels finish a season-long four-game road trip while also looking to snap a four-game losing streak at Quinnipiac Thursday night in a televised matchup on SNY at 7:30 pm. They complete the week at home against Niagara in a rematch of the 2013 MAAC Championship semifinal round from last March. Tip-off between the Gaels and Purple Eagles is at 2:00 pm.
