Saturday School Budget Workshop is Open to the Public

The Board of Education will meet starting at 9 a.m. March 22 to go over the proposed budget for 2014-15.

Superintendent Robert Shaps presented the administration's $131.7 million spending plan to the school trustees March 18. It includes staff and program cuts and falls under the state's tax cap. And primarily because of revaluation, officials estimate the tax rate would be reduced by 2.77 percent over this current year.

“Difficult decisions were made to eliminate some programs and change the way we deliver some services,” Dr. Shaps said in a press release. “It really has been five years of very tough choices considering how to maintain a vibrant school district while trying to contain the cost drivers that contribute to annual budget growth.  The areas of identifiable large savings no longer exist, so we’ve needed to accumulate a series of small reductions this year and appropriate some dollars for one-time use from our fund balance.”

The district has cut its staff by 10 percent in the past six years, while enrollments have steadily risen, Shaps said in his budget message.

The Saturday all-day budget review is set for 9 am-3 pm in the Tiered Classroom at Mamaroneck High School.
