Rye Neck Teacher Wins Scholarship to Incorporate Music in the Classroom

Though it may seem that math and music are unrelated, the symbols utilized to make sense of abstract concepts as well as the way in which music is divided into timed sections illustrates how symbiotic one is with the other.

This connection was not missed by Rye Neck High School math teacher David Grazioliwho was one of three Westchester teachers to win a scholarship from Port Chester's Capitol Theater Community Fund, to spend a week at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Summer Teacher Institute in Cleveland, announced Head Count, the nonprofit organization that established the fund. According to a statement, the Institute "helps educators connect popular music to their own classroom curricula."

Known to incorporate the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame logo into his geometry lessons, Grazioli wrote in his scholarship application that, “We are constantly told to create lessons that cater to the different learning styles and ‘intellegences’ of our students. Music is one of those ‘intelligences’ that is under-utilized in most of our classrooms, and I would like to learn how to effectively incorporate it into my mathematics classroom.”

English teacher Richard Kauffman of Riverside High School in Yonkers and history/sociology/philosophy teacher Martin Billig of New Rochelle High School will also be attending the Institute with Grazioli.
