Public Hearing on Homestead Tax Option in Town of Mamaroneck

The Town of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees will meet at 8 p.m. tonight in the Courtroom in the Town Center.

The Town of Mamaroneck will hold a public hearing tonight at 8 p.m. to discuss the town's proposed adoption of the Homestead Tax Option.

If the tax is adopted as local law, those residing in condos, co-ops and apartments and owners of commercial property would potentially pay a greater share of taxes after the town's revaluation. Those residing in condos that were built as condos and not converted will be classified as "residential properties," and exempt from the Homestead Tax.

According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, "This local option prevents any large shift of the property tax burden to the residential class of property owners after a revaluation."

Nikica Majic Rendic, a Village of Mamaroneck resident and condo owner, said that if the law is adopted, her taxes could more than double over what she is paying now, assuming that the law was put into place in the village.

"I don’t like what the Board of the Town of Mamaroneck wants to do regarding real estate taxes," she said.
