New Law in Place to Protect Downtown Mamaroneck's Aesthetic Integrity

The Mamaroneck board of trustees updated the village zoning code on June 23 in order to prevent eyesores downtown. The new law states that says property owners in the central business district are not allowed to obtain a demolition permit until they have approvals in place for new construction, according to Westchester Business Journal.

Mayor Norman Rosenblum said the law will protect the “aesthetic integrity” of the downtown business district by preventing developers from demolishing an existing building until a business developer is ready to begin construction on the new building to replace it.

Residents hope the new law will disallow development that doesn't fit the downtown, such as turing the former village movie theater into a condominium complex.
