Nearly Half of Mamaroneck Village Still Without Power

An update from Village of Mamaroneck officials on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts.

The latest update from the Village of Mamaroneck:

HALLOWEEN:

Halloween will be restricted to daylight hours. Please make sure all children are accompanied by their parents or guardian. There are several streets that remain impassable or are restricted.

Here are some suggestions for children to have a safe night:

  • Avoid any downed electrical wires or equipment. Treat any wire that’s in the street or on lawns as if it’s carrying electricity, which can carry painful shocks. They also should avoid any puddles or standing water, which can conduct electricity. Numerous wires fell to Sandy’s wicked ride through our area.
  • Be careful crossing streets, especially at corners with no red lights. Hold on to younger brothers, sisters and friends when crossing the street. Be sure to look both ways.
  • Carry a flashlight when walking even if the street is lighted, but definitely if Hurricane Sandy snuffed out street lights.
  • Wear a safety vest. They not only are cool but keep little trick or treaters visible to drivers and others.
  • Never go into a stranger’s house. Make sure mom or dad, a guardian, or an older sister or brother, is within sight.
  • Children should always let their parents know where they are going.
  • Children are urged to be careful near Con Edison work sites in their neighborhoods.

Con Edison crews and contractors are working to restore electricity in many neighborhoods in the village.

Electricity

Customers can report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status online by computer or mobile device at www.conEd.com.They can also call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, have your Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether your neighbors have also lost power. Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available.

The Village of Mamaroneck (VOM) is in recovery stage:

  • All major roads are open.
  • Secondary roads are in process of being cleared. Please note the required process.
    • Reported down trees/wires are secured by the Fire Department.
    • Con Ed must be on site to confirm wires are no longer live and give permission to the VOM to remove the trees.
    • VOM removes trees and restricts continued dangerous areas by yellow tape and barriers.
    • Con Ed returns to restore power.

Please note approximately 35 to 40 percent of the VOM remains without power. We are working with Con Ed rep to expedite as soon as possible.

  • Harbor Island remains closed.
  • VOM is working with Con Ed to restore power to Rye Neck and Mamaroneck Schools without power as a priority.
  • Phones and 911 are working sporadically. The phone companies are aware and addressing.
  • Working generators must be operated OUTSIDE of structures.

Insurance

FEMA and personal insurance claims for damage, you should take pictures showing the damage. Also, if possible, with pictures a verbal description as you take pictures.

The VOM still has limited telephone access. The village office is open and you may come here to communicate concerns. The other form of comunication, if available, is to email at: MANAGER@VOMNY.ORG

Please use all caution during the next few days and remain safe while we recover.

Good question Allison, especially the STATE tax base. After all, Boston Post Road is a STATERead More highway, and any changes made to Boston Post Road will be decided upon and paid for by the STATE.

Well there is definitely more community disapproval with the current plans then there is support. ARead More possible suggestion for the developer may be to cut the plans from 120 units to 60 units with no more then 120 parking spaces . The community is worried about the proposed plan with the idea of adding 240 to 250 additional cars a day causing congestion with respect to traffic. The developer can set aside funds to pay for a daily rush hour bus to bring his new tenants to the trains to cut down on an increase in traffic. The developer to gain public approval should give up on any non access to private roads or it maybe in the interest of the community to make some of their roads which are currently public into private roads whereby no one heading to the golf course or the condominiums could cross these private roads thereby making access to the condominiums quite difficult. As far as a gain in the tax base. with any development where there are no tax abatements, it may appear that tax revenues may increase , however it may turn out to be a zero sum game, where the additional revenue pays for new public sector costs that will come with this project from garbage, water service, police , education, and any and all other public sector costs. With development it is better for the developer to become part of the community . Orienta has great characteristics. Many in this community would like the developer to search for the mean between the extremes with respect to development.

David , can you please explain how having a luxury condominium building increases the tax base?
