According to the most recent results from the Westchester Board of Elections indicate that Andres Bermudez Hallstrom, Leon Potok and Republican candidate Michael Sudano are the new trustees in the Village of Mamaroneck.
Last night, it intitially appeared that all three Democratic candidates were victorious over the Republican candidates, however, the latest numbers indicate that that that assumption may have been a bit premature.
The mood at the Village of Mamaroneck Democratic Party's gathering place tonight, Roasted Peppers, was one of elation when unofficial results were read from the Westchester Board of Elections that showed the three Democratic candidates—Andres Bermudez Hallstrom, Ilissa Miller and Leon Potok—as winning three seats on the Board of Trustees.
"I'm truly honored to be able to represent you in the village—I'm looking forward to it," said Miller, speaking to her new constituents.
Bermudez Hallstrom, the 29-year-old Washingtonville resident, gesturing to Potok and Miller, said, "Today's victory is very much sweetened by my wonderful running mates." He also thanked his fiancee, Angela, a Mamaroneck resident.
"It's very gratifying to be chosen—it's a great honor to be elected to public office," said Bermudez Hallstrom, adding that his first order of business once in office would be to examine how prepared the village is for future storms.
Potok was more blunt in his assessment of the results: "It's better to win than to lose—we look forward to the challenges of it."
Although the turnout in this year's election was high due to the presidential race, Potok said, "[It was] not as much as I think of in a typical year because of the storm and the fact that there was no debate." The second round of debates—which would have included the candidates for village trustee—was canceled last week.
Competing with candidates for the nation's highest office also has its downsides. "It's hard to convince people they have more of an impact with local elections," he said.
Mamaroneck Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Saenger also expressed her thoughts on the election's outcome, which will cause the Board of Trustees to have a Democratic majority.
"We're very gratified—we didn't know what to expect," she said, continuing, "This is great for the whole village."
At the Chatsworth Gardens Apartments, a District 11 polling location in Larchmont, turnout was very good compared to last year, said election workers, with a total of 343 voters and several more affidavits as of 7:30 p.m. Neither Hurricane Sandy nor the bitterly cold temperatures appears to have affected the turnout in what is proving to be a landmark election year.
Although polls were due to close in an hour and a half, several voters stood at ballot stations filling out their forms to be fed into the machine that would scan their results.
Later tonight, in the Village of Mamaroneck, three new trustees and a new village justice will be elected. In the Town of Mamaroneck, a new trustee and new village justice will also be on the ballot.
