Hot Showers Available in Westchester [Updated]

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino delivered an update at Club Fit in Briarcliff Manor.

A curious crowd of locals gathered around a brief conference this morning at Club Fit in Briarcliff Manor, where County Executive Rob Astorino announced the launch of "Operation Hot Shower," in conjunction with area businesses, including the gym.

"I think all of us understand it's not easy to be without power," he said. "On a hygiene level, we all weant to feel clean and feel better about ourselves; and I know for some people, it's been days since they were able to take a hot or warm shower."

Club Fit's Briarcliff Manor and Jefferson Valley locations, as well as all New York Sports Club locations and Chappaqua Crossing are participating in the initiative as power outages continue in Westchester County.

"When we thought about how we could help our friends and neighbors, we realized a nice hot shower could help beat the chill of the past week,” said Club Fit Owner David Swope. “It’s so basic, and yet so essential.”

The announcement came shortly after Astorino said he learned U.S. President Barack Obama has declared the county a disaster area, making it eligible to receive federal funds.

Astorino said he continues to pressure NYSEG and Con Edison when it comes to bringing power back to residents. NYSEG said it anticipates having all of Northern Westchester restored by the end of Sunday, while Con Edison predicted most power will be back by the end of next weekend.

"We are going to hold their feet to the fire," he said.

The County Executive added bringing power back to schools is a big priority.

"We expect every school in Westchester to be open on Monday," he stated. "It's important to get these schools up and running—not only to get kids back in the classrooms, but also most of these schools are polling places and we have an election on Tuesday. So, it's important for our democracy that people get to cast a ballot on Tuesday."
