Cuomo, the Moderate, Prepares for Re-Election

The governor has pushed for property tax freezes, tax incentives for manufacturers and legalizing the medical use of marijuana.

As Gov. Andrew Cuomo sets up his bid for a second term as governor, political analysts said the incumbent is smartly aligning himself as a moderate.

The governor has pushed for property tax freezes, tax incentives for manufacturers and legalizing the medical use of marijuana.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Lawrence Levy, who is the executive dean of the National Center of Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, said Cuomo is "very good at a policy and political balancing act that takes into account that New York state is a traditionally divided place."

The AP piece also analyzed his State of the State address and his 2014 agenda, which include property tax rebates for homeowners in some municipalities.

Of course, Cuomo has also been a champion of liberal causes, including gun control and gay marriage.

New York's wide political divide could be seen in and around New York and its suburbs, where Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio easily won his race, while Republican county executives won in Westchester and Nassau counties.
