Court Officers Replace Police in Mamaroneck Town Court

The Town of Mamaroneck Board approved a measure to save on the cost of police overtime.

Following in the footsteps of other local municipalities, the Town of Mamaroneck will now utilize New York State (NYS) Court Administration Officers to provide security in Town Court, saving $15K in police overtime costs.

The change was motivated by budgetary concerns, but it's not the only benefit that will be reaped by the change.

"The objective was to reduce our costs but also was to be able to focus our police, over time, on things such as training, patrol, investigations and other police work," said Town Administrator Steve Altieri at Wednesday's board meeting.

Currently, Town of Mamaroneck Police officers provide security for the court.

Alteiri said that police would still be responsible for the transport and oversight of prisoners scheduled for court.

Court Administration Officers are NYS Peace Officers and are authorized to perform many of the same duties as police officers. Training consists of a 14-week course at a Court Officer Academy.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a measure to hire five part-time Officers at $35/hour; it is expected that the five will rotate to fill in for others when they are absent due to illness or vacation.
