Guns Vs. Hoses: Mamaroneck Village Police and Fire to Play For Charity

The Village of Mamaroneck's Police and Fire Departments will raise money for a local charity this weekend.

This Saturday the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department (VMPD) and Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department (VMFD) will square off as (temporary) rivals at Mamaroneck High School at 1:30 p.m. for a flag football game to benefit a local charity.

Following the game, there will be an afterparty at Molly Spillane's in Mamaroneck.

What is being coined the first annual "Turkey Bowl—Guns vs. Hoses," is actually a spin-off of a similar event that Mamamroneck restaurant Molly Spillane's sponsors with the Eastchester Police and Fire Departments, said VMPD Spokesperson Det. Sandra DiRuzza; the restaurant approached both the VMPD and VMFD with the request.

According to DiRuzza, the VMPD will have 23 players with, presumably, a corresponding number from the VMFD.

There will be no charge for admission to the game but, "We are hoping if someone is attending the event they will make a donation of any amount," she said.

All proceeds will be donated to the Mamaroneck-based Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds for research, medical equipment and parent/patient care for hospitals that provide care to children with cancer. The non-profit receives no funding from the government or pharmaceutical companies, according to their website.

Although the charity was chosen as one that is familiar to the VMPD from previous fundraising efforts, future games may benefit other charities as the need arises.
