Obituaries: A Look At Those Who Passed On Recently

A roundup of area residents' obituaries

Several area residents died recently, and so now we look back at their lives: 

John Gallagher, June 19, 1924-Sept. 29, 2012: John Gallagher, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, died on Sept. 29, 2012. He was 88. John was born in NYC on June 19, 1924 to the late John and Margaret (Cosgrove) Gallagher; He served In the Army Air Reserve during WWII. He was past president of the Eastchester Irish American Club, was a supporter of youth sports and the Cub Scouts and was an avid golfer.

James A. Stern, Oct. 26-Sept. 25, 2012: Born in NYC on October 26th, 1920 to Edna Jacob and H. James Stern, he was raised in New Rochelle. Jim's interest in mechanical tinkering, math and science steered him to MIT for a degree in metallurgical engineering. Immediately upon graduation in 1942 he became a 2nd lieutenant in the army. Well into his later years, he could describe the inner workings of various of the ordinance he was charged with repairing during WWII. His first career as engineer/plant manager at I. Stern and Company was followed by one as president of National Photocolor Corp, a laser optic firm. Active at Temple Israel of New Rochelle, Jim was described as a cooperative board member, striving to bring people together to improve his community.

Ellen Robin Scharfman, Aug. 3-Sept. 25, 2012: Ellen was born in New York City on Aug. 3rd, 1954, and spent her formative years growing up in the Bronx, on Gerard Avenue and 164th Street near Yankee Stadium. The family then moved to New Rochelle in the mid 1960s where she went on to Graduate High School in 1972, and remained there until her passing.

Carol A. Muccini, Feb. 12, 1937-Sept. 27, 2012: Carol A. Muccini a 48 year resident of Port Chester, NY passed away on September 27, 2012. Born in New York City on February 12, 1937, Carol was the daughter of Herman Duehne and Grace Meyerhoff Duehne. She graduated Scarsdale High School, Class of 1955. After attending Boston University and Eastern Medical School, Carol became a medical assistant and X-Ray technician working at Midtown Hospital in New York City. She was an active volunteer at Meals on Wheels, where she was honored as the 1988 Meals on Wheels Volunteer of the Year, a quilting instructor at Rye Seniors and Cub Scout den mother.
