Jacques le Sourd, Started News Career in Mamaroneck, Dead at 64

He was the theater critic for The Journal News for three decades.

Longtime theater critic Jacques le Sourd died of an apparent heart attack on Feb. 6, The Journal News reports.
Pete Kramer of TJN has written an appreciation of le Sourd, one of the vanishing cadre of Broadway critics.

"Le Sourd left the paper in June 2009 when The Journal News eliminated the Broadway critic’s position," Kramer writes on his In the Wings blog. "But for 34 years, le Sourd covered Broadway, Off-Broadway and local theater with a pen that flowed equally well whether crafting a pick or a pan."

Playbill also wrote an obituary.

"His first newspaper job was as a reporter for the Daily Times of Mamaroneck, NY," Playbill reported. "Mr. le Sourd began contributing to the Journal News in Westchester County in 1975 and remained there until 2008, when he was laid off by the paper. He was an all-purpose theatre journalist. His duties included reviewing Broadway and Off-Broadway shows as well as reporting on theatre news and writing feature stories. His first review was of the musical Chicago. In 1978, Gannett began syndicating Mr. le Sourd's reviews, giving him considerable influence as a critic."
