Mamaroneck's Annual Fireman's Parade Kicking Off the Holiday Weekend Tomorrow Night

Though it's a few days short of the Fourth of July, the annual Village of Mamaroneck Fireman's Parade tomorrow night, July 2, will officially kick off the beginning of the holiday weekend in the Sound Shore.

The parade—one of the largest of its kind in Westchester—has attracted up to 40 fire departments from across the state in past years, and will coincide with the all-volunteer Fireman's Carnival in Harbor Island Park (which will run every day through July 6, from 7 p.m. to midnight).

Last year, residents lined Mamaroneck Avenue, some sitting in beach chairs watching the action and some diving into the street, hands outstretched, as firefighters tossed out candy and sounded their horns.

Parade marchers will wind their way from Mamaroneck Avenue School down to Harbor Island Park, beginning at 7 p.m., but a word to the wise: park your beach chairs on Mamaroneck Avenue earlier rather than later to avoid the gridlock in and around the area.  Mamaroneck Avenue will be closed from I-95/New England Thruway to Boston Post Road starting at about 6 p.m. until the completion of the parade, which takes several hours. There will be no parking on Boston Post Road from Mamaroneck to Mt. Pleasant Avenue on the business (north) side of the street.

"Traffic along Boston Post Road in the vicinity of Mamaroneck Avenue will experience significant backups and delays," said Mayor Norm Rosenblum.

Marchers will include members of the Village of Mamaroneck and neighboring Harrison Police Departments; the New York Police Department (NYPD) Band; members of the Villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont American Legion; Knights of Columbus Color Guard; the Mamaroneck EMS; Miss Westchester and Miss Westchester Teen 2013 and representatives of fire departments as close as Harrison and other parts of NY State and as far away as Germantown, CT and Bogota, NJ.

With a 50 percent chance of rain in the forecast for Tuesday evening, hopefully the parade will go off without a hitch.
