Haydn:  String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 64, No. 3
Elgar:  String Quartet in E minor, Op. 83
Beethoven:  Quartet in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2

This acclaimed quartet takes its name from Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars believe was Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved,” the intended recipient of a mysterious love letter. Two decades after this famous story inspired its formation, the acclaimed Brentano Quartet are acknowledged masters, internationally recognized; within a few years of its creation the group had won the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award. Brentano’s music hit the silver screen last year, starring alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken in the critically acclaimed film A Late Quartet.

In two decades travelling the world, the group’s players have not only mastered the entire two-century range of the standard quartet repertoire but travelled beyond it. The Quartet celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2002 by commissioning ten composers to write companion pieces for selections from Bach’s Art of Fugue, the result of which was an electrifying and wide-ranging single concert program. The Quartet has also worked with the celebrated poet Mark Strand, commissioning poetry from him to accompany works of Haydn and Webern.

In their impressive program at the Emelin, they will apply this proficiency to a carefully selected group of stunningly beautiful, lyrical compositions from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries.
