Mamaroneck Fire Displaces 10

Mamaroneck and Harrison firefighters extinguished a fire at a home on 1515 Mamaroneck Ave. this afternoon that tore through the entire right side of the structure, leaving little salvageable in its wake.

The Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department received the call at 1:40 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 2:29 p.m. said Fire Chief Robert Pecchia.

The 10 residents-six adults and four children-were not home when the fire occurred. There were no reported injuries, said Pecchia

In addition to the extensive fire and smoke damage to the entire right side of the home from the basement to the first floor, Pecchia said there was also smoke damage to the left side of the home.

"There were no walls left. The ceiling fell down from the water," he said.

The fire is thought to have started on the bottom floor, although the cause is currently "undetermined," said Pecchia.

Carolyn Sherwin, a volunteer spokesperson for the Red Cross, said that the organization was working with the family-a multi-generational group that includes grandparents, two sisters, their husbands and children-to obtain emergency lodging, food and other assistance, as the home is no longer livable.

"A fire like this is the time that friends and family come together," she said.

The family was able to retrieve some children's clothes and toys, including a Mickey Mouse doll for a set of twin girls who resided at the home.

Mamaroneck Police have blocked off the avenue from the entrance to I-95 South near 1210 Mamaroneck Ave. Traffic is being rerouted to 95 South.
