“'Giving to where we're living’ is the slogan of Mamaroneck Shares, and our community certainly lived up to that,” said Student Aid President Alice Tenney. “This money, donated by generous souls on Mamaroneck Avenue, will go straight to needy Mamaroneck High School seniors to help them pay for college.”

Presented to Tenney by Peggy Jackson and Ellen Hauptman—the founders and directors of Mamaroneck Shares—the check represents a share of contributions by attendees at the 2012 summer block parties to support four local charities. This sum gives a welcome boost to the Student Aid Fund in its fundraising efforts on behalf of the MHS class of 2013. In addition, involvement in the block parties helped build community awareness of the Student Aid Fund, Tenney notes.

While 2012 was its first year as a Mamaroneck Shares charity, the Student Aid Fund has a 76-year history of raising funds in the community and providing college scholarships to MHS graduates. Last year, 54 members of the 2012 graduating class were awarded two-year Student Aid Fund scholarships ranging from $500 to $3,500 per year. All awards are based on financial need. In the past several years, economic conditions have presented fundraising challenges, even as community needs have grown.

Mamaroneck Shares is a not-for-profit organization created to raise money for local charities while supporting local business and celebrating the Village of Mamaroneck. This is accomplished by holding four community block parties during the summer months. Student Aid Fund board members and friends were delighted to serve as volunteers at these events in 2012, and look forward to a continuing relationship with Mamaroneck Shares to benefit the young people in our community.
