College Admissions Essays Are All About Self-Branding

In order for a college admissions essay to be truly effective, an admissions officer should be able to summarize a student's subject in a simple sentence. This kind of self-branding is accomplished by choosing a creative topic (or a creative twist on a common topic), and writing about it with enough detail to burn a vivid image or description into the reader’s brain. If, during the selection process, the decision comes down to two similarly qualified candidates, every student should feel confident that an admissions officer could stand up with his/her essay and easily describe the story in hand. “I like the girl who performed trapeze in the circus,” or “How about the girl who cooked her grandfather’s last meal from scratch?” For this reason, students should concentrate on giving purposeful focus to their stories and, after writing the first draft, do a branding test.  If an essay can't be easily narrowed down to a punchy description, the subject matter probably needs to be altered or simplified to leave that sparkling impression.
