Applause Weekend Performance Workshop to Perform in Martin Charnin's Real to Reel: Broadway Goes to Hollywood at the Emelin Theatre This Weekend

Applause Westchester students are enjoying the exciting opportunity to work with Martin Charnin in his production of Real to Reel: Broadway Goes to Hollywood. As director, lyricist, composer, librettist and producer of more than 85 theatrical productions, Charnin is most associated with the international musical smash Annie and its sequel, Annie Warbucks, as well as two musicals composed by Richard Rodgers: Two by Two (1970, revised 2004) and I Remember Mama (1979).  Charnin’s Real to Reel: Broadway Goes to Hollywood will be performed this weekend, March 7 and 8 at 8:00 PM at The Emelin Theatre, 1 Library Lane, Mamaroneck. Tickets range from $15 to $42. 

Martin Charnin's evening at The Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, celebrates dozens of Broadway songs that were also performed in Hollywood Musicals. The show called "Real to Reel", stars Broadway luminaries, Shelly Burch, John Tracey Egan, and Christian Duhamel. These stars are joined by ten Stars to Be from Applause, directed by Heather Capelle and choreographed by Debi Mandala of Applause, and narrated by Martin Charnin. All will be strutting their stuff, singing and dancing to numbers from The Wiz, Grease, Sweet Charity, Cabaret, and Annie.  

"I was thrilled to find ten Stars to Be at Applause who can really sing, dance and act for this show," said Charnin.

“The audition process is always difficult one when there is so much talent here,” said Heather Capelle, President of Applause. 

Applause students appearing in the show include: Lianne Davidoff and Lauren Steinthal of Harrison, Abby Lee, Ben Moskow and Sammy Pignalosa of Larchmont, Gabby Kmetz of Mamaroneck, Steven Thomas, Jr. of Mount Vernon, Jillian Harrison of Pelham, Rachel Schmaier of Purchase and Kali Barisano of Tuckahoe.

“This was a great opportunity, one I’ll never forget,” said Sammy Pignalosa. “It gave me the hands on experience that I will need going forward in my career.” 

Charnin has received four Tony nominations, two Tony Awards, seven Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards, three Gold Records, two Platinum records, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Peabody Award for Broadcasting. 

From the moment that movies learned how to talk, Hollywood has had a love affair with the Broadway Musical. Real to Reel: Broadway Goes to Hollywood stars a company of extraordinary singing talents, including 10 Applause Weekend Workshop performers and hosted by Martin Charnin.  The show will examine songs from the stage (Real) and how they eventually wound up bring recreated on celluloid (to Reel), with live musical performances from, among others, Oliver, Funny Girl, 42nd Street, Gigi, Camelot, Kiss Me Kate, West Side Story, Rent, Chicago, and of course, Annie.
