Bankruptcy Court: Sound Shore Health System Purchase OK

The sale of Sound Shore Health System could yield 2,000 layoffs in the fall.

The takeover of Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle and other entities of the Sound Shore Health System by Montefiore Health System has been approved by the courts.

Bronx-based Montefiore announced Friday that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has OK'd the acquiring of assets of the Sound Shore Health System. The two health organizations reached a takeover agreement at the end of May

The closing, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to occur in the fall, according to official at Montefiore.

The Journal News reported July 25, 2013, that a state Labor Department notice of layoffs was sent to almost 2,000 people who work at both the Sound Shore and Mount Vernon hospitals, the Helen and Michael Schaffer Extended Care Center, Mount Vernon Housing Corp. and New Rochelle Sound Shore Housing.

The state-require notice advised the workers that they will be laid off sometime between October 23 and November 5, which would be after the transfer of assets is completed, The Journal News said.
