The following was posted on behalf of the organization.

This Mamaroneck High School Senior Kimberly Flores was awarded the first $2,000 Jean Bruce Scholarship by Larchmont Chapter AJ of the international P.E.O. organization.

Jean Bruce, a former member of Chapter AJ, provided funds in her will for this scholarship. P.E.O. prides itself on providing women opportunities to pursue further education through scholarships, grants, low-interest loans and through attendance at Cottey College, which is solely owned and supported by P.E.O.

Flores will be attending  SUNY Binghamton this fall and Chapter AJ is thrilled that it is able to assist her with her educational costs. Kimberly was awarded this scholarship because she exhibited excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service academics and demonstrated a potential for future success.

On a national level, P.E.O. will be awarding $2,500 STAR scholarships to young women who are high school seniors and who have demonstrated the same excellence in their high school years.

Chapter AJ sponsored one winning candidate in 2009 and in 2012 seven New York State graduating seniors became STAR scholars. Chapter AJ is very interested in sponsoring another STAR scholar.

To be considered, candidates must be recommended to Chapter AJ by their counselors for this highly competitive scholarship by October 15, 2013. Any interested seniors should contact their high school counselors as soon as possible to get their applications in by the deadline.
