Mamaroneck's Staycation Possibilities

A concert series at Harbor Island Park will take place Sundays in July and August.

Though it may seem like a significant portion of Larchmont and Mamaroneck residents retreat to distant summer locales once school has let out, a wide array of free activities await those that choose to spend the hot months closer to home.

As in years past, the newly renamed Village of Mamaroneck (VOM) Arts Council (formerly the VOM Council of the Arts) will present their series of free summer concerts in Harbor Island Park, called "Summer Nights on the Sound." The concerts, by all estimations, have been a popular attraction in the village, with over 200 people in attendance, sprawled out on beach chairs and towels in the park.

The concerts will take place every Sunday after July 4 through Aug. 4 at 7 p.m., with rain dates on Aug. 18 and 25; funding is allocated by the VOM Arts Council and the John and Margit DeRosa family.

Here's this year's lineup:

Thursday, July 4

St. Thomas Orchestra Comprised of musicians from all ages and walks of life (members range in age from 15 to 85), this 11-year-old orchestra founded by the Mamaroneck-based Music Director Bernard Tamosaitis and trumpeter Peter Arike, will play pieces like Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel Overture and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, with the 11-year-old soloist Sakurako Saimaru.

The musical performance will also coincide with the annual Fireman's Carnival (June 28 through July 9) and fireworks show in Harbor Island Park that draws attendees from miles around.

Sunday, July 14

Ed Palermo Big Band - Though Ed Palermo notes on his website that he "decided to stop using Frank Zappa's name in our concert and night club advertising," due to problems with Zappa's estate, his 17-piece band will continue to play big-band interpretations of the Mother of Invention frontman's discography.

Arranger, saxophonist, guitarist Ed Palermo has toured and recorded with many different artists, including Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, Lena Horne and Tony Bennett, according to a notice sent out by Mayor Norm Rosenblum.

Sunday, July 21

Musicians in the group have performed with Jennifer Lopez, Chaka Kahn and other major acts.

Sunday, July 28

Third StoneFormed in 1995, this five-member jam band play blues, R&B, soul, classic rock and funk in the NY suburbs and Southern New England.
