Jimmy and the Parrots to Headline Summer Concert Series in Memorial Park

The annual outdoor concert series will begin on Monday, July 11 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Park in the Larchmont. Three more concerts will be held following that, every Monday at 7.

Although temperatures have soared this past week making outdoor activities during the day a sticky and uncomfortable endeavor, the free outdoor concerts at Memorial Park starting on Monday, July 11—beginning at 7 p.m., when temperatures start to drop, for the next four weeks—will be a welcome relief to the stifling humidity of July.

The concerts—which have been going on for about nine years—has attracted local families, many of whom come early to get a good spot, catch up with friends, and spend time with family.

According to Maria Gallagher, assistant superintendant for recreation in the Town of Mamaroneck, past concerts have drawn approximately 400 attendees, depending on the weather.

"The concert series is one of the nicest ways for a family to spend a summer evening together," said Gallagher, continuing,"The setting is beautiful, it's convenient, they can bring refreshments or buy them at the barbecue that is set up at the park. Some parents come right off the train and walk to the park to meet their family, it's so
wonderful to watch."

The first concert will be Jimmy and the Parrots—a beach-themed Jimmy Buffett cover band—who also play songs by the Beach Boys, Paul Simon, Jerry Jeff Walker, Harry Belafonte, and Bob Marley.  With band members clad in Hawaiian shirts and tie-dye, the resemblance to Beach Blanket Bingo may be uncanny.

Despite an unexpected that left many ducking for cover during Jimmy and the Parrots' scheduled performance, the band played on, cranking out acoustic renditions of the classics for the families brave enough to ride out the storm.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs to sit on and food and beverages will be available for sale.  Free parking will be available in Commuter Lot #1 on Myrtle.

The concert schedule is as follows:

  • July 11 – Jimmy and the Parrots
  • July 18 – Reunion – local band that plays R&B, standards and disco songs.
  • July 25 – Twist of Fate – a Caribbean/Rock & Roll band that plays fun music.
  • August 1 – Back to the Garden 1969 – music from the Age of Aquarius

"It's great that the town has been committed to bringing the summer concert series at Memorial Park to the residents," said Gallagher. "With music as the theme, the event brings the community together in one of the town's beautiful parks and spontaneously creates a fun-filled evening."

In case of inclement weather, concerts will be rescheduled when possible.  Please call (914) 381-7865 for updates.

Editor's Note: The date of the first concert was erroneously stated as July 18; that was corrected to July 11 in the first paragraph of the article.  Additional quotes were added from Marie Gallagher to an earlier version of this article as well.
