Harbor Island Fireworks Commemorate Hard-Won Independence

The annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration last night at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck was a time honored tradition for some and a first time experience for others.

The annual fireworks on Fourth of July at Mamaroneck’s Harbor Park felt like they were so close you could almost touch them. The thunderous explosions—whose ferocity set off several nearby car alarms—coupled with the inevitable  “ooh’s and aah’s” of happy spectators only added to the festive environment.

Several disappointed onlookers made their feelings known after two wayward fireworks went off prematurely, however, once the show officially started, no one was complaining.

The crowd gathered under the orange glow of sunset after a hot and humid, but beautiful, Independence Day.

People were gathered for one reason, “fireworks” said Arianna, an 8-year-old from Mt. Vernon. Though it was her first time in Mamaroneck for the Fourth of July celebration, others, like 19-year-old Michael, also from Mt. Vernon, had been coming to Harbor Park for many years. Julie, 54, from Scarsdale has been coming to Mamaroneck since her now-teenage children were small for the “nice community feel to” the festivities.

To some, the fireworks mean more. For Steve, a former member of the US Military, the Fourth is a “day of remembrance,” one he chose to share with Dana, 26, from Briarcliff, who, though it was her first time at Harbor Park, had already decided it was “the best place.”

Though the Carnival was in full swing with a ferris wheel, rides, and prizes, the star of the evening was definitely in the sky. Beautiful and colorful fireworks interspersed with “U.S.A.” and heart-shaped explosions, dazzled the onlookers for nearly a half an hour. When the show was over and the crowd flooded Boston Post Road, nearly everyone, young and old, had an enormous smile on their faces.

All in all, the show at Harbor Park was a fitting tribute to America and a grand celebration of her 235th birthday.
