Landscapes from the Southwest @ Larchmont Public Library

The Larchmont Public Library presents “Landscapes from the Southwest”, an exhibit featuring the paintings of local artist, Jim Maciel, in the Library’s Oresman Gallery from December 2, through December 29, 2011. The exhibit is free and open to everyone during normal library hours.

The exhibit features watercolors that have been inspired by the artist’s travels to the Southwestern Unites States and several of our national parks. Mr. Maciel’s influences include such artists as George Catlin, Charles Russell and Chiura Obata’s paintings of the Yosemite Valley.

Maciel’s artistic pursuits have their origins back in 1966 when he attended the    Swain School of Design, a small college in New Bedford, MA, in order to learn art. The artist admits that during the early 1970’s art did not have much meaning for him and he laid down his brushes. This remained the case until he moved to New York City in 1975 as a VISTA volunteer. Maciel says that the City gave him the courage and inspiration to start painting again, showing his paintings in a number of cooperative galleries.
