Drawing Until Dawn: Conjuring Images for Social Change

The Larchmont Public Library presents “Drawing Until Dawn: Conjuring Images for Social Change”, an exhibit of artworks by K. Wendy Popp in the Library’s Oresman Gallery from April 2, through April 30, 2011. The exhibit is free and open to everyone during normal library hours. There will be an artist’s reception celebrating Ms. Popp’s exhibit on Saturday, April 2, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. The reception is also free and everyone is welcome.

Also on Saturday, April 2, immediately preceding the artist reception at 1:30pm, Ms. Popp will present a 40-minute “gallery talk” on the topic of “Art and Advocacy”. Themes of moral conflict, resistance and spiritual resilience and how illustrative art can elicit tangible change will be explored. Ms. Popp will use the art featured in her exhibit to discuss how the many consciousness raising efforts, collaborations and exhibitions of which she has been a part have effected specific change for struggling communities. She will also touch on how her exhibit can engage communities and students to creatively participate and contribute to positive social change. Ms. Popp will also be signing copies of her latest books which will be available for purchase at the event and are provided for sale by local bookshops, The Voracious Reader and Andersons Bookshop. The gallery talk is also free and open to all.

Ms. Popp’s pastels and drawings have been used to illustrate publications internationally for over two decades and her artwork is held in private collections and galleries throughout the United States. Her art has been published in numerous books, periodicals and newspapers and she is the recipient of numerous awards including the Sydney Tyler Book Award and the Washington Irving Children’s Choice Honor. She has been an educator for twenty years for New York Institutions of art including Pratt Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is currently Artist and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City.
