Survival Guide For Continued Power Outages

There are still many households without power in Larchmont and Mamaroneck. Here is a list of places that offer free WiFi among other things.

For those still without power or the benefit of back-up generators in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, times are tough.  The latest estimates from Con Ed as to when power will be restored are currently Thursday at midnight for many customers.

So, for those still in the dark, here’s a list of places where free WiFi is available, ice (dry and regular) can be purchased and coin-operated laundromats can wash and dry a few loads.

Free Wifi

  • – 136 Prospect Ave., Mamaroneck. The new library has plenty of room to spread out, plug in your laptop, and zone out for a few hours.  There are also 12 public computers available.
  • – 121 Larchmont Ave., Larchmont. The library has six public computers and a quiet place upstairs to plug in your laptop.
  • Starbucks – ., Mamaroneck and Larchmont.  Free coffee not included, unfortunately.
  • – 1298 Boston Post Rd., Larchmont. Enjoy coffee, sandwiches and uninterrupted internet access.

Dry Ice

Although Con Ed was distributing dry ice on Monday to customers without power, they have not announced a second date to hand out more ice to those that may have missed it.  Here are some local places where ice is still available:

  • – 500 Fenimore Rd. #1, Mamaroneck. This dry ice distributor is one of the only places around that still has ice available.  The cost is $1.20 per pound, with a 10-pound minimum.
  • , 1326 Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck. The store still has bags of ice in stock, but no dry ice.
  • Stop and Shop, 2425 Palmer Ave., New Rochelle. The store has plenty of bags of regular ice, but no dry ice.

Laundromat

  • – 521 N. Barry Ave., Mamaroneck.
  • Harrison Laundry Station – 297 Halstead Ave., Harrison.
  • Becky Bubbles Laundry Center – 3 Huguenot St., #A, New Rochelle.

Good question Allison, especially the STATE tax base. After all, Boston Post Road is a STATERead More highway, and any changes made to Boston Post Road will be decided upon and paid for by the STATE.

Well there is definitely more community disapproval with the current plans then there is support. ARead More possible suggestion for the developer may be to cut the plans from 120 units to 60 units with no more then 120 parking spaces . The community is worried about the proposed plan with the idea of adding 240 to 250 additional cars a day causing congestion with respect to traffic. The developer can set aside funds to pay for a daily rush hour bus to bring his new tenants to the trains to cut down on an increase in traffic. The developer to gain public approval should give up on any non access to private roads or it maybe in the interest of the community to make some of their roads which are currently public into private roads whereby no one heading to the golf course or the condominiums could cross these private roads thereby making access to the condominiums quite difficult. As far as a gain in the tax base. with any development where there are no tax abatements, it may appear that tax revenues may increase , however it may turn out to be a zero sum game, where the additional revenue pays for new public sector costs that will come with this project from garbage, water service, police , education, and any and all other public sector costs. With development it is better for the developer to become part of the community . Orienta has great characteristics. Many in this community would like the developer to search for the mean between the extremes with respect to development.

David , can you please explain how having a luxury condominium building increases the tax base?
