Mamaroneck and Rye Beaches Reopen After Sludge Spill

Two days after an advisory was issued for residents to steer clear of the Long Island Sound near the Mamaroneck and Milton Harbors, the ban has been lifted.

Beachgoers were told to avoid the area after an underground force break near Blind Brook released a torrent of potentially hazardous sludge near where the Brook empties into the Sound.

The Westchester County Health Department lifted the advisory this afternoon "based on the results of water samples which show that the water does not pose a public health risk," according to a statement. Force main repairs were completed Tuesday night and water was pumped through the pipe while workers checked air relief valves along the main, said the Health Department.  The line is now pumping normally.

The following Mamaroneck and Rye beaches are now reopened: Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club (MBYC), Shore Acres Point, Harbor Island Park, Shenorock Shore Club, Coveleigh Club and Greenhaven Association.
