UPDATE: New Rochelle Shelter Closed, Others Open

Out of power and in need of a hot shower, a place to plug in a cellphone, surf the Web or get hot coffee? Read on.

For those thousands of residents in and around New Rochelle and the rest of the Sound Shore without electricity, hot water or heat, there are several options to help folks through this post-Hurricane Sandy time. With hotels across the state booked up, many are in need of some simple assistance. Here is the ongoing list of free resources.

Supplies and Food Distribution: The Red Cross will distribute supplies and food at City Hall Parking Lot, 515 North Ave. on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Red Cross Shelters: The shelter located at Albert Leonard Middle School, 25 Gerada Ln. in New Rochelle closed Friday. The Red Cross is still maintaining shelters at the Yonkers PAL, 127 N. Broadway in Yonkers, and in Chappaqua at Chappaqua Crossing off of Bedford Road. Cots, hot food, snacks, children's activities, recharging outlets and hot showers are available.

Warming Center/Food: There are warm spaces for neighbors to sit in the College of New Rochelle Sweeny Student Center and the Gill Library. Our food service, Culinart, has agreed to offer a 10% discount on food purchases above $5 in the cafeteria (in the Sweeny Center) or at our Starbucks (located next to the library entrance) to association members who are looking for a warm meal.

Warming Center/Recharge Stations: Korean Presbyterian Church of Westchester on Pintard has invited neighbors of Residence Park to come to the church to keep warm, rest, and recharge phones/notebook computers. While we will do our best to be hospitable, there are a few guidelines we would kindly ask our guests to observe:

  • The Social Hall will be open as an Emergency Center from 8 AM to 8 PM - from Monday, November 5 until Friday, November 9
  • Guests are requested to enter the Social Hall through the stairwell next to the Pintard House - signs will be posted
  • Guests are requested to remain in the Social Hall when in the building
  • Some tables and chairs will be set up
  • Coffee, tea, and water will be available
  • Outlets will be available to charge phones, tablets, and notebook computers
  • Free WiFi will be available
  • Please, no furniture or large electronics - small electronics only
  • No cooking
  • KPCoW will not be held liable for guests who opt to utilize the Korean Presbyterian Church as an Emergency Center

Hot Showers and Charging Stations: All NY Sports Clubs are offering the public a chance to take a hot shower and use the locker rooms for free.

Hot Showers and Charging Stations: The New Rochelle YMCA is offering hot showers and charging stations free to the community until all power is restored in New Rochelle. The Y is located at 50 Weyman Ave.

Charging Stations/Supplies: The Curtain Shop, 541 Main St. in New Rochelle is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are offering charging stations and selling blankets, candles, batteries, battery powered candles, stove-top coffee pots and thermal-ined curtains. 

Warming Center and Charging Stations: The New Rochelle Public Library will be open until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The hours on Saturday are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because of the Veteran's Day holiday, the library will be closed Sunday and Monday.

Warming Center and Charging Stations: The Doyle Senior Center on Davis Avenue will be open until 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Hot Showers and Sleep Shelter: The 24/7 emergency shelter in White Plains has a locker room for hot showers. Folks can stay overnight, too. Ongoing through the power outage. 32 Manhattan Ave, White Plains.

Hot Showers and Charging Stations: The JCC of Mid-Westchester is offering hot showers and use of the locker rooms, heat and charging stations to the public. 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale.

Free Coffee and Charging Stations: Greenville Community Church has power for charging devices and hot coffee. Free to the public. Friday, November 2, from 9AM-2PM. 270 Ardsley Road (near Central Ave.) From the pastor, Edward:"We are blessed to have power at the church!  If you would like to stop by Friday and re-charge, please feel free to drop in, get warm and re-charge your devices while you stay and relax awhile. There is ample parking behind the building. Stop by the church office when you arrive and we'll direct you to available rooms. We'll have the coffee on also!"

Free Charging Stations: The Digital Arts Experience in White Plains is open to the community for internet, power, phone charging. 170 Hamilton Ave., Suite 100.

Free Charging Stations: Several CVS Pharmacies and Target Stores are offering free phone/laptop charging at their stores.

Con Ed reports this morning that there are only 5 customers in New Rochelle that are without power.
