Community Corner

Yoga for a Cure this Sunday, 830am at Larchmont Yacht Club

We've heard it said many times "it takes a village", but until someone faces a situation that requires the support of friends, family and strangers, one doesn't truly know what this means. Mary Olson Menzel knows. Nearly 9 months ago, Mary was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer. The diagnosis took Mary completely by surprise. As a working mom with an amazing toddler boy at home, two terrific step children and a husband she adores, Mary was unprepared for the enormity of all the decisions, doctor appointments, treatments and special care it would take to get her healthy again.  She was also taken aback by how tired she would feel all the time.  Friends, family and neighbors sprung to action. They cooked meals, brought gifts, hosted playdates, shared driving shifts to treatments and even hired an integrative nutrition chef to come and cook the family meals when her energy was feeling low. And it worked:  the treatments, the love and the generosity of the community. They all were a critical part of healing Mary.

Mary feels blessed every day that her cancer was caught early. Her road to recovery is showered in sunlight, paved with sweet smelling gardenia's (her favorite) and has many rest stops along the way to hydrate with her favorite "green juice".   Strong, healthy and ready to take on this next stage of her journey, Mary wants to give back to the community and say thank you.

Once she was strong enough, Mary asked herself "How can I give back to these wonderful people and share the power of what I have learned over the past few months?" A yoga advocate, she determined "I'll host a giant Yoga class. Right here, in our backyard.  I will invite all my favorite local Yoga instructors and vendors to participate. We can discuss overall wellness as it pertains to our body, mind and spirits and talk openly about tangible ways in which each and every one of us can work to prevent breast cancer.”

Please join Mary's Yoga for the Cure this Sunday and everyone is welcome. It promises to be a great time with fabulous gift bags, juices and lots of smiles going around.
