United Way of Larchmont-Mamaroneck Announces 2013 Local Grant Recipients

July 2013 – United Way of Larchmont-Mamaroneck is pleased to announce the 2013 Local Presence Program grant recipients. Over $3,000 in grants was awarded following the recommendations of United Way Local Presence Committee Members.

 

These modest grants awarded by United Way’s Local Presence Program help fund local community-based human and health service organizations that do not currently receive United Way funding. Organizations that receive funding share with United Way the fundamental belief that education, income, and health are essential for a better life.

For over 30 years, Cancer Support Team has provided professional nursing, social work, and other supportive services, free of charge, to cancer patients and their families living in lower Westchester County. The 2013 grant will support nursing, counseling and case management services to medically underserved cancer patients and their families, specifically targeting oncology patients who do not have adequate resources to be able to obtain medical and support services related to their diagnosis.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church will use United Way’s grant in support of their food pantry and community dinner operations. Each Tuesday 90-110 people in need receive brown bags lunches and enough pantry items for at least 3 additional meals. Community Dinners held once a month serve between 80 and 100 people in need of hunger support. The Church’s pantry operation also provides food/meal vouchers gift cards to local supermarkets on a as needed basis to help battle the fight against hunger.

 

Founded in 1980, Washingtonville Housing Alliance is dedicated to improving housing conditions for low and moderate-income families in the Mamaroneck area. This year’s local presence grant will support the housing crisis fund which provides one-time grants and loans to individuals and families for back rent assistance and relocation assistance. Clients served are very low income and the majority are female heads of household.
