Sh e is now a consultant in perinatology and clinical professor of obstetri cs and gynecology at New York Medical College in New York.\n \;\nDr. Thornton is the first black woman in the United States to be board-cert ified in high-risk obstetrics. She was the first African-American woman to be invited to become an oral examiner for the American Board of Obste trics and Gynecology and a life fellow of the New York Obstetrical Socie ty and the New York Academy of Medicine.\n \;\nHer family memoir\, T he Ditchdigger&rsquo\;s Daughters\, was adapted into an award-winning mo vie and translated into 19 languages. Her new memoir entitled Something To Prove\, was named the grand prize winner at the 2011 New York Book Fe stival.
