Where to Order "Roast Turkey to Go"

Takeout turkey dinners for Thanksgiving Day can be ordered with all the trimmings, stuffing, gravy, appetizers and desserts, boxed for pickup. A relatively new and viable option is take-home that includes everything except the turkey.

Many options are available to anyone planning to serve roast turkey dinner to family and/or friends on Thanksgiving Day, November 25.

"You can order turkeys from Plates raw for cooking in your own home, pre-brined, or cooked with a la carte trimmings," said Matthew Karp, chef/owner of Plates in Larchmont.

Turkey packages can also be customized to a degree as to accompaniments by some restaurants and in a new twist, customers can order everything except the turkey from Chiboust, a French bistro in Tarrytown.

"Our turkeys will be 'fresh-slaughter', which means that they are killed on order and not processed, pre-packaged or stored," Karp said.

Plates will box a complete dinner that includes a 14 to 16-pound, free-range roast turkey from Misty Knoll Farms, Vermont, on the carcass (not sliced); it can feed 10 to 12.

The takeout meal created by Plates chef/owner Matthew Karp includes poached cranberry sauce with warm spices and port wine, sweet potato puree with brown sugar and marshmallow, French green beans with pearl onions, stuffing with sausage, sage and celery, turkey gravy and two pecan pies. The cost is $385 or $415 with mixed farm greens and vinaigrette. Turkey alone can be ordered at $6.50 per pound uncooked or $10.50 per pound cooked. Add $25 for brining. Sides can also be ordered individually. Pine Island oysters are available at $3 each or $33 per dozen.

Misty Knoll Farms is a family-owned farm located in Vermont's Champlain Valley between Rutland and Burlington; its flocks are raised in open barns with free access to pasture, sunlight, wholesome feed and fresh water. This is credited with allowing them to grow more robust and meatier.

Zitoune in Mamaroneck has two takeout packages available -- customers can choose a 12-pound turkey or an 18-pound bird.

A $195 take-home package being offered by chef/owner Alain Bennouna  accommodates 10-to-12 people and includes a 12-pound turkey, Merguez stuffing, gravy, salad, an appetizer, two different side dishes and two different desserts.

Zitoune's $295 package serves up to 20 people and includes an 18-pound turkey, Merguez stuffing, gravy, salad, two appetizers, three side dishes and three desserts. Appetizers include shrimp cigars, lamb or spinach briwats and duck B'steeya. Side dishes include collard greens, ginger and honey glazed carrots, couscous with raisons, and cranberry sauce. Desserts are coconut creme brulee, rice pudding and fresh fruit.

Shopping for accompaniments

The farm market at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is sold out for turkeys and some restaurants will stop accepting turkey takeout orders on Thursday or Friday of this week.

But buying meal accompaniments poses less of a deadline problem. The farm market at Stone Barns Center will still sell popular side dishes and ingredients  for turkey dinners on Friday through Sunday, November 19-21.  Eggs, pork sausages, pork roasts and chickens can be purchased along with vegetables including carrots, beets, herbs, salad greens, spinach, kale, cabbage, garlic, winter squash and leeks. Pies from Randell Dodge's Red Barn Bakery in Bedford will also be available.

On Friday and Sunday, admission is restricted to Stone Barns members at Seedling level or above from 1 to 2 p.m. The market will be open to the general public on Friday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. After Thanksgiving, Stone Barns winter markets will be held on the second Sunday of each month from December to April from 1 to 4 p.m.

Chiboust like more than 75 percent of local restaurants will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. But it will package just about everything for takeout except the turkey for pickup on Thanksgiving Eve (November 24).

Chiboust will be happy to pack containers with mashed potatoes and gravy. However more intriguing dishes appear on its extensive take-home list which includes soup by the quart, oyster stew, stuffing with chestnuts, apples, celery and onion, duck liver pâtés, yams, a pear, gorgonzola and spiced walnut salad, vegetables, breads, plus desserts that serve six to ten people and include cheesecake, pies, bourbon pecan and lemon meringue tarts and chocolate gingerbread pudding. Orders need to be placed by noon, October 20.  Typical cost: a platter of pates and wild boar salami that serves six is priced at $54.

The Farmhouse at the Bedford Post will bake pumpkin and apple pies for pick up on Thanksgiving Day  given 48-hour notice. The cost per pie is $16. Coffee and pastries will be available in the morning.
